10 Easy Measures to Include in Hair Care Routine for Men

Men are also subject to a number of hair problems, such as frizzy hair, brittle hair, oily or dry scalps, hair loss, and even bad hair growth. Most of the guys may not be too particular with their hair care routine since this is something only women are known to be more concerned of.

But for those who are desperate to find a hair care routine suited for the male hair, here are some easy and effective measures that you can follow.

1. Choose the right shampoo

Choosing the right shampoo is actually vital for healthy hair. Shampoo is not only for cleansing or for making the hair smell fresh, but it should also be nourishing. There are numerous products in the market today, some formulated with antioxidants and other herbal extracts. All you really have to do is find a shampoo that appeals to your liking, but just be sure to opt for one that is pH balanced to keep hair healthy and strong.

2. Condition your hair

Moisture is very important for the hair that is why it pays to take that extra step and condition your hair. Those with long or curly hair can benefit from this because the coating provided by a conditioner can leave the hair less prone to tangles, while adding extra body to the hair. But for men with very short hair, you can simply use a combination shampoo and conditioner.

3. Avoid cheap styling products

If you are big on styling your mane, you might want to avoid the cheap products or questionable brands. The reason why they are cheap is that they are usually formulated with chemicals that are less costly but could end up drying or greasing up the hair.

4. Dandruff shampoos

One of the most common complaints that men have about their hair and scalp is dandruff. According to dermatologist Dr. Carolyn Jacob in WebMD.com, dandruff can be an overreaction of the body to the normal yeast found on the skin which results to inflammation and flaking of the scalp. But this condition could still be caused by many things that is why finding the right anti-dandruff shampoo for you would take some trial and error.

But the Mayo Clinic advises that it is best to use a mild antidandruff shampoo first. If this does not work after two weeks, then you can choose another one, with a different active ingredient.  One can start with a brand that contains pyrithione zinc or selenium sulphide, if it is not effective you can transfer to a product containing Ketoconazole, but if the problem still persists, a stronger formulation that contains salicylic acid or sulfur is a stronger formulation.

5. Use conditioner that provides extra body for thinning hair

If you are already affected by hair thinning, you can actually conceal the problem by giving your hair extra volume. You can achieve this with the use of a conditioner that will give extra body. It gives your hair extra coating giving the right volume and bounce.

6. Tone your scalp

Toning the scalp also means giving it some good and gentle massage using the balls of your fingertips. Doing this even for just a couple of minutes can actually be very healthy for your hair as it stimulates the release of the natural oils of the scalp. They not only leave the hair shiny but they also aid in keeping it strong. So give your scalp those extra kneads rather than just rubbing the shampoo and rinsing it.

7. Dry carefully and easy on the comb

When walking out of the shower it’s easy to just rub your hair as if you’re drying up the dog! This is actually one of the leading causes of damage hair in men. The reason here is that wet hair is much prone to damage because the strands are weaker at this point. Stroke your hair with a towel instead towards the direction that it grows. Also, be gentle with the combing if you don’t want to uproot and damage your hair with the pulling action of the brush.

8. Groom your hair with the right tools

For men grooming can be considered as a no fuss no muss ritual in front of the mirror, or not at all! But do you know that by choosing the right tools actually saves your hair from damage? Well this goes out particularly to men with long hair. The right tools such as brushes with natural bristles, wide-toothed combs, and even a cooling hair dryer can make styling gentler to your hair.

9. Avoid too much chemicals

Some guys are just into coloring and perming that all these chemicals can leave the hair dry, brittle, and damaged. These substances can be very harsh to the hair and scalp, which is why you might want to minimize their use. Also your styling products, like gels, clays, masks or hair pastes should also be gentle enough and used sparingly, most especially if you are already experiencing hair thinning.

10. Sun protection for the scalp

For men who are already experiencing hair thinning, the bald spots can lead you to be vulnerable to the damaging ultraviolet rays. This can result to premature aging of the skin in the area or worse, skin cancer. This may not be the usual place people apply sunscreen, but it is actually a very vulnerable area. Slather on a sunscreen lotion that has an SPF of 30 if you happen to have these bald spots or thinning areas.

Tight hairstyles pose strain to the hair follicles. Invest on a good brush or comb, specifically those that have wide teeth and smooth tips. It is also important that you go easy on brushing when the hair is wet because this is the time when it is most sensitive.

When using curling or straightening irons, make sure that you apply some protective coating over your hair first.

GET A HOLD OF YOUR STRESS LEVELS

Know to manage your stress and strive to keep your body healthy through exercise, proper sleep and nutrition. Over time, this will reflect on the health of your hair.

Smoking and alcohol is also a significant contributor to hair loss in women. Those who smoke regularly are at a higher risk of female hair loss in the temple are, while heavy drinking can pose problems at the front of the head. If you want to give your hair the best chances at being lustrous and healthy, try to keep these vices at bay.

TAKE SUPPLEMENTS

Sometimes the main cause of hair loss is simply the lack of nutrients in the body. One of the important minerals for hair health is iron, and this is something whose numbers often suffer due to the monthly menstrual cycle. To be sure you can always approach your primary care physician before taking any iron supplements to know if you really need it. Too much in your system can also be detrimental for the body.
